Understanding Abortion in the Nigerian Context

To every beginning, there is always an end.

I know it’s almost a week now, but permit me to welcome you to the last month of the year 2024!

My dear friend, welcome to December💃🏽

I don’t know about you, but I am excited that this year is finally rounding up, the hype and excitement to start off a new year is gradually setting in and I honestly cannot wait to see what the new year holds!

How are you My dear friend? Are your plans for December aligning or should I mind my business? 😀 Well, no pressure, I also don’t have a plan yet, but trust me, this December will be detty.

Can I hear an Amen?

Today, we will be taking on a topic that is widely considered controversial.

“ABORTION”

Before I proceed, I want to know your opinion about this topic especially because it is illegal in our country Nigeria. SHOULD ABORTION BE LEGALIZED?

While you ponder on that, let me walk you through what abortion really means.

“Abortion is the spontaneous or induced extraction or expulsion of a fetus weighing 500g or less before the age of viability”. For context - Age of viability is the age at which when a fetus is delivered, it has 50% chance of survival.

Most people assume that the Nigerian law regarding abortion is absolute regardless of the situation, but it’s not. And while the legality or not of abortion is still widely debated, learning about it in the Nigerian context is crucial. What does the Nigerian law permit/allow?
